Emagine is seeking a Tech Lead to join a collaborative and technically challenging project environment in Portugal. This role is ideal for an experienced software engineering professional with a strong backend background and hands-on expertise in PHP, Java, and Go, looking to take ownership of the technical direction and evolution of a high-performance financial processing platform.
As a Tech Lead, you will combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership, driving architectural decisions, designing scalable backend services and APIs, and ensuring high standards of performance, reliability, and maintainability. You will also play a key role in the modernization of the platform, supporting the migration of existing services from PHP and Java to Go, while mentoring engineers and acting as a technical reference for complex initiatives.
What You'll Be Working On
Own and drive the technical vision, architecture, and design of the platform.
Lead the design and implementation of scalable backend services, distributed systems, and B2B APIs.
Make critical technical decisions around scalability, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
Lead architectural reviews and ensure alignment with the long-term technology strategy.
Drive the migration and modernization of services from PHP and Java to Go.
Define and promote engineering standards, coding guidelines, and development best practices.
Identify opportunities to improve system performance, scalability, and reliability.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to software engineers through code reviews, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
Lead technical discussions and facilitate solution design workshops.
Contribute to technical roadmaps, engineering processes, and delivery practices.
Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
Act as the main technical point of contact for complex initiatives and critical production incidents.
What We're Looking For
Proven experience as a Tech Lead, Technical Lead, Lead Software Engineer, or Senior Software Engineer with strong technical ownership.
Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing architectural decisions.
Strong hands-on expertise in PHP, Java, and Go.
Solid experience designing and developing backend services, distributed systems, and APIs.
Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational database concepts.
Proven experience with performance optimization, scalability, and reliability.
Experience designing and implementing RESTful and/or B2B APIs.
Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, and microservices.
Experience working with AWS and cloud-based environments.
Strong experience with Git and GitHub.
Experience mentoring engineers and driving engineering best practices.
Strong problem-solving, communication, decision-making, and technical leadership skills.
Professional proficiency in English.
Nice to Have
Experience with observability tools such as Grafana, Loki, or Alloy.
Experience with Docker and containerized environments.
Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration technologies.
Experience leading application modernization or technology migration initiatives.
Previous experience in financial services, payments, fintech, or other high-volume transaction environments.
