The role
Position Summary
The Data Center Chief Power Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, reliability, and optimization of all electrical power infrastructure within a data center or mission-critical facility. This role leads electrical engineering strategy, ensures continuous uptime, manages high-voltage and low-voltage systems, and oversees compliance, safety, and emergency response activities.
The Chief Power Engineer works closely with facilities teams, operations, construction, commissioning, vendors, and executive leadership to ensure reliable delivery of power to critical IT loads.
Key Responsibilities
Power Infrastructure Operations
- Oversee operation and maintenance of:
- Utility service entrances
- Medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear
- UPS systems
- Generators and paralleling gear
- PDUs and RPPs
- Busways and power distribution systems
- Battery systems (VRLA/Li-ion)
- Grounding and bonding systems
- Ensure continuous uptime and redundancy performance (N+1, 2N, etc.)
- Lead electrical switching procedures and outage planning
- Review and approve electrical SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs
Reliability & Risk Management
- Develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for power incidents
- Lead failure investigations and corrective actions
- Monitor electrical system performance and capacity trends
- Manage arc flash and electrical safety programs
Engineering & Design Oversight
- Review electrical designs for expansions and retrofits
- Support commissioning and integrated systems testing
- Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and utility providers
- Ensure compliance with:
- NFPA 70 / NEC
- NFPA 70E
- IEEE standards
- OSHA regulations
- Local electrical codes
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and mentor power engineers, technicians, and operators
- Coordinate contractor and vendor activities
- Provide technical escalation support during emergencies
- Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation for critical incidents
Energy & Efficiency
- Optimize power usage effectiveness (PUE)
- Support sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives
- Analyze electrical load growth and future capacity needs
- Evaluate renewable energy and backup power strategies
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Electrical Engineering
- Power Engineering
- Energy Systems Engineering
- Related technical field
Experience
- 8–15+ years in:
- Data center facilities engineering
- Mission-critical operations
- Industrial power systems
- Experience with Tier III/Tier IV environments preferred
- Experience managing high-voltage systems (typically 13.2kV–34.5kV)
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of:
- Power distribution systems
- Protective relaying
- Generator synchronization
- UPS topologies
- SCADA/BMS/EPMS systems
- Load flow and coordination studies
- Electrical testing and commissioning
Certifications (Preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE)
- Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP)
- Data Center Certified Associate/Professional (DCCA/DCCP)
- NFPA 70E certification
- OSHA 30
- Licensed High Voltage Switching Operator (where applicable)
